Hunter.io: the reference tool for finding professional emails

Hunter.io has become the undisputed reference for finding and verifying professional email addresses. If you do B2B prospecting, you've definitely heard of it. More than 6 million users rely on it to enrich their contact lists and launch cold email campaigns.

The tool is primarily designed for sales teams, recruiters, founders in go-to-market phase, and anyone who needs to contact professionals they don't yet know. Easy to learn, reliable with data, and now accompanied by a complete outreach suite that changes the game somewhat.

What made Hunter famous is a simple promise: enter a domain name, get the associated emails. Enter a name and company, get the direct address. It sounds basic. In practice, it's what most salespeople need, and Hunter does it better than the competition.

Main Features

You enter a domain name (e.g., company.com), Hunter returns the email addresses associated with that domain. The tool also identifies the most common email format used by the company: firstname.lastname@, f.lastname@, or other. You don't just get a raw list. You understand the company's naming logic, which allows you to build other addresses by deduction.

Ideal for targeting a specific company before building your prospecting list. You visit their website, launch Domain Search from the Chrome extension, and you have your contacts in 10 seconds.

Email Finder

You know someone's name and company? Hunter finds their email address. High match rate, result verified in real time. This feature built the tool's reputation. By combining data crawled from the web (contact pages, posts, professional networks) with the format identified via Domain Search, Hunter generates and validates an address with a confidence score.

A high confidence score (90%+) means the address is quasi-certified. A low score signals that it's an estimate. Transparent, useful, actionable.

Email Verifier

Before sending, you verify. Hunter analyzes each address and tells you if it's valid, invalid, or risky. The tool performs multiple checks: format, domain existence, SMTP server response. Result: fewer bounces, sender reputation preserved.

On paid plans, verification is automatic as soon as an email is found. You don't need to run a manual verification again. Real time savings.

Discover (B2B database)

Hunter has built its own B2B database. You define your ideal customer profile: industry, company size, location, technologies used, buying signals. Hunter returns the leads that match.

Basic filters are available on the Free plan. Advanced filters (signals, technologies, precise firmographic data) require a Starter plan minimum. For targeted prospecting, it's a real plus compared to a purely "email finder" tool.

Sequences (cold email outreach)

Hunter is no longer limited to email search. The tool now includes a complete cold email module: multi-step automated sequences, email personalization, open and click tracking, automatic email account rotation, and AI assistant for writing.

Everything works from your Gmail, Google Workspace, or Outlook account. Hunter sends via your own address, which preserves deliverability. No third-party server burning your domain.

Convenient to avoid juggling between Hunter and a separate sequences tool. It doesn't replace Lemlist with its advanced personalization options, but for standard use, it's more than sufficient.

Chrome Extension

Hunter's Chrome extension has over 600,000 users, with a 4.7/5 rating on the Chrome Web Store. It activates directly on the website you visit. Are you on a prospect's "About" page? Available emails appear in one click in the sidebar. No workflow interruption, no back-and-forth to the main interface.

API and Integrations

Hunter integrates with standard CRMs: Salesforce, HubSpot, Pipedrive, and others via Zapier. A Google Sheets add-on lets you enrich lists directly from a spreadsheet. The API exposes all tool features, with quotas varying by plan (from 50 calls/month on Free to 25,000 on Scale).

Hunter also supports the MCP (Model Context Protocol) protocol, which allows direct integration into AI workflows. Rather forward-thinking.

Advantages

Data quality. This is Hunter's undisputed strength. Emails found are automatically verified, and the bounce rate experienced by users is significantly lower than that of competing tools. 4.6 on Capterra and 4.4 on G2 is consistent with this reputation.

Ease of use. The interface is clean, the tool responds quickly, and the learning curve is almost nonexistent. You're operational in 10 minutes flat. No training needed, no consultants required.

Serious free offering. 50 credits per month, a complete Chrome extension, access to the verifier, and up to 500 recipients per email sequence. Enough to test the tool in real conditions before committing financially.

Evolution toward a complete platform. Hunter is no longer just an "email finder." The combination of Discover + Sequences makes it an end-to-end outreach tool, competitive against much more expensive solutions. For a small team, it's potentially the only prospecting tool you need.

GDPR compliance. Hunter is transparent about its data sources and provides tools to help users stay compliant. In an increasingly strict regulatory context, this is a concrete advantage, not just a box checked.

Reliability over time. Hunter has existed since 2015. It's a mature product with a stable team and a consistent delivery track record. You're not betting on an 18-month-old startup that might pivot or disappear.

Limitations

Credits run out fast. On the Free plan, 50 credits/month is very limited. On the Starter plan (€34/month), 24,000 annual credits equal 2,000 credits/month. For an active sales team doing 50+ searches per day, you hit the ceiling quickly. Extra credit packs exist, but they add up fast.

Coverage varies by market. Hunter is very effective in English-speaking markets (US, UK, Australia, Canada). In French-speaking markets, particularly France and niche countries, coverage is less dense. You'll find fewer leads, and sometimes no addresses for contacts who are active online.

No phone numbers. Hunter is email-focused. If your strategy includes cold calling or SMS outreach, you'll need to supplement with another tool (Apollo, Kaspr, Lusha).

Pricing can climb. Between the Growth plan (€104/month) and Scale (€209/month), the jump is significant. And each additional email account beyond the included quota costs €10/month. For a large team with multiple prospecting accounts, it adds up.

Data can become outdated. Like any tool of this type, some addresses in the database are no longer valid (job changes, company departures). Real-time verification lessens this problem, but doesn't eliminate it entirely.

Detailed Pricing

Plan: Free | Monthly price: €0 | Annual price: €0 | Credits/year: 600 | Email accounts: 1

Plan: Starter | Monthly price: €34 | Annual price: €408 | Credits/year: 24,000 | Email accounts: 3

Plan: Growth | Monthly price: €104 | Annual price: €1,248 | Credits/year: 120,000 | Email accounts: 10

Plan: Scale | Monthly price: €209 | Annual price: €2,508 | Credits/year: 300,000 | Email accounts: 20

Plan: Enterprise | Monthly price: Custom quote | Annual price: Custom quote | Credits/year: Custom | Email accounts: Custom

Credits are used for Email Finder, Email Verifier, and Domain Search. Auto-verification is included from the Starter plan onwards, as well as lead enrichment, AI assistant, and advanced filters on the B2B database.

Additional email accounts are billed at €10/month per account on Growth and Scale plans. Factor this in if you have multiple salespeople prospecting from different addresses.

The Enterprise plan includes a dedicated account manager, custom credit allocation, and unlimited API access. Pricing available on request only.

User Reviews

Hunter is consistently well-rated: 4.6 on Capterra, 4.4 on G2, 4.7 on the Chrome Web Store. That's not chance and it's not luck.

What consistently comes up in positive feedback: data reliability first, time savings on prospecting second, and interface simplicity. Users who did manual email research before Hunter directly measure the impact on their daily productivity. "Game changer" and "time saver" are the most common phrases.

Recurring criticisms focus on two main points. First point: the credit system frustrates some users, especially when they run out mid-month and must wait for renewal or pay for extra credits. Second point: uneven geographic coverage, with notable gaps outside the Anglosphere.

Some feedback also mentions occasionally obsolete emails, which is inevitable for this type of data. Built-in verification limits the impact but doesn't guarantee every found email is active.

Overall, satisfaction is high and paid users tend to stick around. That's a good indicator.

Hunter excels at email search and verification. But it doesn't cover all use cases.

Apollo.io is the most serious competitor. Larger database, phone numbers included, integrated CRM, advanced sequences. More complete than Hunter on almost all fronts. More expensive too, and more complex to learn. If your team needs an all-in-one outreach tool, Apollo is worth evaluating in parallel.

Snov.io is a direct competitor on core business. Often cheaper on large volumes. Data quality is slightly lower than Hunter's according to most comparisons, but it's a credible option for price-conscious teams.

Dropcontact specializes in French B2B enrichment. Particularly strong in the French-speaking market. If you're prospecting primarily in France, Dropcontact is often complementary, or even superior to Hunter on this specific segment.

Lemlist doesn't find emails, but excels at sequences. If you already have your lists and seek an outreach tool with advanced personalization (dynamic images, personalized landing pages, LinkedIn integration), Lemlist is the natural choice to complement Hunter.

Verdict

Hunter.io is a solid, reliable tool, well-positioned in its core business. Data quality is real. The interface is a pleasure to use. And the evolution toward a complete outreach platform with Discover and Sequences is a good strategic direction.

It's starting to look like an accessible Apollo.io, without the complexity or price. For an SMB or startup that wants to move fast without drowning in configuration, that's clearly an advantage.

We recommend Hunter to any team doing B2B prospecting and seeking a simple, reliable, and reasonably priced tool. Start with the Free plan to test in real conditions. If you exceed 2,000 searches per month and need advanced filters, the €34 Starter plan is very reasonable.

The only real limit remains geographic coverage. If you're prospecting mainly in France in niche sectors with companies poorly visible online, you'll hit gaps. In that case, combine Hunter with Dropcontact to cover blind spots.

For everything else? Hard to do better at the same price.
